As more information is released about the various COVID vaccines, some research has shown potential inflammatory side-effects for those receiving cosmetic treatments. While these cases have been rare, we feel it is necessary to inform our patients about what to expect when they receive treatments at Imagen.
In December 2020, the FDA released information regarding potential side-effects of the Moderna vaccine for patients with dermal fillers. Some patients with Hyaluronic Acid Fillers experienced a late-onset inflammatory response; specifically, facial swelling around the site of treatment after receiving the vaccination. During Moderna’s phase three trial, a patient who had dermal filler placed six months before their vaccination experienced swelling one day after receiving the vaccine. Another patient had a dermal filler placed two weeks before vaccination and the swelling appeared two days after they were vaccinated.
A separate document shared by PRS reported, “Inflammation appeared spontaneously, usually 4–5 months after the last injection.” PRS explains that this swelling presents at areas containing the dermal filler at least two months after filler injection, and all reactions are believed to be immunological in nature; an immunological response is how your body defends itself against bacteria, viruses, and foreign substances.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported patients who experienced inflammation were, “treated with oral steroids and antihistamines, which quickly resolved the reactions.”
At Imagen, we recommend our patients wait to have their filler treatment if they have had or are planning to receive a COVID vaccination within a month of treatment. It should be noted that there is no way to predict if or when you may experience side-effects related to your dermal fillers and the COVID vaccine. Swelling cases have been rare but completely random and the time from vaccination to experienced side-effects has ranged from a day to a year or more from vaccination.
We will continue to keep our patients informed as more information continues to come out regarding the COVID vaccines. If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact us directly via phone or text at 402-509-8473.
